About me

The main focus on my work is in working with people who are challenged by or intent on working with their gender identity. My interest in Counselling was fuelled by my experience as Samaritan volunteer, a post I held for seventeen years.

I am currently working on a doctorate at Middlesex University "The Role of Psychotherapy in the treatment of Gender Dysphoria"
In addition to my work as a therapist I frequently deliver Keynote Speeches on Gender Identity at conferences and deliver training to Psychotherapists and Counsellors as well as on gender identity awareness in the corporate arena.

Sexual & Gender Identity:
Bisexual - Female

Experience and approach

Specific experience and training:
After qualifying as a Counsellor I trained in Gestalt at The Metanoia Institute where I attained a Diploma and then an MSc in Gestalt Psychotherapy.
During this time I developed an interest in facilitating groups and still retain an interest in group work as I believe it to be very effective when working with minorities. My own growth as a therapy group participant gave me a valuable experience in the effectiveness of group therapy.

Having begun as a general practitioner I now work more and more with individuals and couples from minority backgrounds. As a trans person it was perhaps inevitable that I would work with people experiencing difficulties with gender identity or seeking support in changing gender roles. I work with both adults, children and young people

My underlying approach is to respect my client’s right to self determination and believe psychotherapy should be non pathologising.

As a member of The World Professional Association for Transgender Health I am particularly interested in the clinical treatment of trans people and am currently on a doctoral programme at Middlesex University. The subject-

‘Treatment pathways for people seeking help with gender identity issues

I mentioned that my change of gender was traumatic and I eventually experienced the benefits of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). I was so impressed by the benefits of the approach that I trained to level 2 and provide treatment for clients suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
