Experience and approach

Specific experience and training:

Before qualifying as a relationship counsellor and then as a psychotherapist and supervisor, I worked as a teacher and as a priest in London.

I hold Diplomas in Counselling, Psychotherapy and Supervision from CCPE London and I have been a UKCP-registred therapist since 2001.

For five years I was the Gay Men's HIV and Sexual Health Counsellor at PACE, since when I have also been working in private practice in the West End/City and in Putney, South West London.

I work in Central London (Fleet Street) and South West London (Putney).

I work with gay and lgbt individuals and couples (although I can only accommodate couples in Fleet Street at present).

My own experience convinced me what a difference a gay-affirmative counsellor with some understanding of those issues can make to the therapeutic process. From growing up gay to coming out, from exploring sex to forming relationships and from negotiating mid-life to the challenges of ageing, I offer a wholistic perspective on the issues you may bring.

Therapy provides a friendly and non-judgemental space in which we can work together to explore your issues.
Counselling is usually short-term (between 1-12 sessions) and typically addresses how to manage problems better.

Psychotherapy is more open-ended (anything from 3 months to 3 years) and addresses, not only the causes of some of the problems you face but also the purpose of them.

There are many approaches to counselling and psychotherapy with no one 'right' method.

When we first meet we will be to sound out the issue you are bringing and discern what may be the best fit for you to explore them in counselling or psychotherapy.

I also work with couples on a range of issues:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Managing conflict
  • The impact of our parenting and family of origin
  • Family dynamics
  • Feeling distant or estranged
  • Cheating and affairs
  • Sex and intimacy
  • The impact of sex/internet 'addiction'
  • Power struggles and inequality
  • Adjusting to mid-life and ageing

I also offer supervision to other counsellors in both Central London and Putney.
