Rethinking Transvestism: A new clinical approach

£120 for the day, £110 for members of the Pink Therapy Directory of therapists

Author of 'Queering The Tranny: New perspectives on male transvestism and transsexualism', Alex Drummond presents this whole day workshop to offer clinicians new insights and ways of working with the issue of males who sometimes present as female, by exploring both historical and contemporary conceptualisations of the phenomenon, and introducing the emerging construct of 'transgender' as a more useful paradigm to work from.

Whilst historically, male cross-gendered identities have been defined as either 'transvestite-or-transsexual', current scientific thinking is throwing new light on the nature of gender-identity formation and thereby allowing us to approach it from a less pathologising framework.

The workshop will also explore the sexualised aspects of 'transvestic-fetish' and attendees will be encouraged to look more creatively at the symbolism inherent in the performance and to consider the biochemical reinforcement mechanisms that underpin such enactment.

It is hoped that the workshop will enable participants to be more at ease with this issue– at both a clinical and personal level.

Training time is from 1pm to 7pm.
