Welcome to the Directory of Pink Therapists, an
online directory of Therapists who work with sexual minority clients from an
affirmative standpoint.
Until a decade ago homosexuality was considered by the Word Health Organization to be a mental illness. This pathologising of sexual variation has affected the way many therapists view sexual difference. We are judged through a heterosexual lens of what is normal. This has begun to change and increasingly therapists of all sexualities who dont adopt this stance are coming out of the closet and saying that sexual difference is just that, a difference. They believe that what is sick is societys attitude. However, living with stigma and oppression can create additional pressures on us, and people who have minority sexual identities may benefit from emotional and psychological support to deal with the prejudice they experience.
The entrants in this directory have self-selected according to some basic criteria: they have completed at the minimum a diploma in counselling, they are members of a professional association which has a code of ethics and a complaints procedure, and they have been willing to declare their own sexuality and state what specific training they have had to work in a sexuality affirmative way.
The information on the database is more or less as they have submitted it. Pink Therapy is not responsible for the quality of service or truthfulness of the information contained here. We have asked to see evidence of qualifications, but you are expected to check out the rest as necessary.
If you dont find someone in your town you may want to check adjoining towns. Obviously some parts of the country are much better served than others and this is partly due to the directory being quite new and so many therapists who might be in here simply wont have heard about it yet. If you cant find someone near to where you live or work, then you could check the online directory for the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy or the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy,or you can search the register of the British Psychological Society for a clinical or counselling psychologist. We would however, encourage you to look specifically for people who say they work with sexual minority clients in an affirmative manner, and to check this out when you call. Joining the Directory
We welcome applications to join the Directory from therapists of all sexualities who are willing to take a non-pathological view of sexual variation. This is what has also come to be know as an Affirmative perspective. If you want to apply to join the Directory click here.
