2010/2011
* Are you a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist or clinical or counselling psychologist?
* Are you interested in specialising or adding a specialisation in therapeutic work with sexual minority clients to your work?
* Are you flexible, motivated, and committed?
Pink Therapy is pleased to be able to offer the UK's first professional training course for counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists in working with sexual minority clients from a non-pathologising perspective.
We offer you…
Core Tuition at our popular Continuing Professional Development training events see below.
A supervision group – meeting monthly for 6 hours, 9 meetings per annum (54 hours supervision) on a Friday 3-9pm. This will be training supervision and is envisaged to include some developmental and experiential work as well as clinical discussions about clients or professional issues. It is not intended to replace your regular clinical supervision. The groups will be facilitated by our Clinical Associates Damian McCann and Leah Davidson both or whom have extensive experience of group supervision and of working with sexual minority clients
Indicative content is likely to include familiarising participants with nurturing and conflictual discourses of gender and sexuality, working with psychopathology and severe disturbance, understanding more about your own sexual development and it’s implications for therapeutic engagement, working with erotic feelings in therapy, understanding abusive experiences and their impact, LGBT health issues, relationship therapy & working with same sex relationships.
Clinical Work
Students are expected to work with at least two sexual minority clients per week, and if you are in London, we may be able to augment your intake with clients from our low-cost counselling service where appropriate and available. These clients can either be seen at your own premises if suitable, or we may be able to help you find suitable premises. If you are already in private practice, it may be possible to use clients from within that practice. Pink Therapy is not responsible for finding clients for you though, and you should have reasonable plans for access to a suitable pool of clients.
We are in consultation with a London based University to discuss them accrediting our course.
We require from you:
Commitment! The course is run intended to be run over one year – attendance is expected at a minimum of 80% of the supervision requirements and 100% of the training and academic requirements, if you miss a training event you'll need to make up the module at some future date.
One seminar presentation – a one-hour Diversity Seminar on a gender or sexual minority group about which you’ve previously had little or no experience of working with – presented to a group of fellow students and our Clinical Associates.
One academic paper (5-7,000 words) on an aspect of sexual minority therapy, Students will be encouraged to consider publication of successful papers.

Personal Therapy with a course-approved therapist is generally recommended, and may be required for some individuals at some point during the course. This is something to be explored with the course director and may be required on the recommendation of the course director and/or your course supervisor. Working at depth with sexual minority clients requires a deep level of self-awareness and given that many people have had fairly poor experiences personal therapy with therapists inexperienced in working with sexual minority clients, this work may have not had the opportunity to be done. Furthermore, issues may arise during the course either in the workshops or supervision groups and so having access to personal therapy will be invaluable to assist you in your development and practice.
Successful completion of the course, will result in the award of a Certificate in Sexual Minority Therapy awarded by Pink Therapy – external validation is being negotiated and the course is externally moderated
