Essentials in Sexual Minority Therapy Day 4 - 22 Nov 2008 or 21 March 2009

Working with People Coming Out - Deirdre Haslam

The day will offer the opportunity for a mix of experiential work, discussion and the introduction to some theories about coming out.

Participants will be given the opportunity to work in pairs and small groups using case study material and questions to reflect on practice and therewill also be time for large group discussion.

Aims

To provide a space for reflection on the particular needs of clients who are coming out.

To share knowledge and expertise with colleagues on the needs of clients who are coming out.

To introduce participants to models of coming out

The workshop will be both didactic & experiential in nature

Objectives

By the end of the workshop participants:

will have a clearer understanding of the particular needs of this client group as they come to terms with their sexual identity

will have some tools to help them in working with clients who are coming out

Deirdre Haslam has been working as a therapist with LGB clients for some sixteen years. She was a volunteer counsellor at London Friend and spent ten years as a supervisor at ELOP, the East London OUT Project. She is a trainer on the counselling courses at Anglia Ruskin University and has also offered workshops both for Pink Therapy and elsewhere on working with LGBT clients. Deirdre is a Clinical Associate of Pink Therapy and a contributor to the Pink Therapy books. She works in private practice in East London.
