Our Story

27 years of challenging how the mental health field thinks about gender, sexuality and relationships.

As with many radical grassroots movements, our story started 27 years ago in 1999 with our founder, Dominic Davies, and quickly evolved into a community and collective organisation spanning thousands of directory members, hundreds of students, and expert collaborators from across the globe.

All united in the belief that LGBTQ+ people deserve affirming, specialist mental health care that seeks to understand us, rather than judge and pathologise.

Our Timeline

1999

A Shared Consulting Room

Dominic Davies founded Pink Therapy to meet a need mainstream services weren't meeting, only a few years after homosexuality was de-listed as a mental disorder in the UK.

2000

Gay Affirmative Therapy

Our first textbook, co-written by Dominic Davies and Charles Neal, brought a radical new approach to therapy. Two more followed as we expanded to speak to more overlooked identities.

2001

The First Conference

In-person training and collaborative sessions led to the first Pink Therapy Conference, laying the foundations for the annual gathering we still hold today.

2006

International Summer Schools

Therapists from across the world came together to collaborate, shape the profession and contribute to shared community knowledge. Many early contributors are still with us today.

Today

27 Years On

GSRD Therapy is now a recognised standalone discipline, with our Seven Core Components translated into 19 languages and representation across 70+ cities worldwide.

Along the way

Between the milestones, a community grew. Summer schools, diplomas, masterclasses and gatherings from 2011 to 2023, with some of the many people who helped shape our work.
